SEC161 – Security Foundations and Cryptography

In this course, students will explore the fundamentals of protecting digital information through a detailed examination ofvarious security principles, threat actors, and attack vectors. The first lesson covers the essentials of informationsecurity, including types of threats such as cybercrime, insider threats, and nation-state actors, as well as frameworks,regulations, and resources for managing security. The second lesson delves into pervasive attack surfaces and controls,addressing social engineering, physical security, and data protection strategies. The course also includes an in-depthstudy of cryptography, starting with fundamental concepts and moving to advanced topics like digital certificates, publickey infrastructure (PKI), and secure communication protocols. Through hands-on projects and case studies, studentswill develop practical skills in safeguarding information and implementing effective security measures.
