HVAC work is about more than heating and cooling. Learn how HVAC systems work—and what to do when they don’t. You’ll learn how heating, cooling, electrical, refrigeration, and airflow systems work together while building the skills to install, maintain, diagnose, and repair residential and light commercial equipment.
In Unitech’s HVAC program, you’ll build skills in:
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting heating and cooling systems
- Working with electrical components, controls, and wiring diagrams

HVAC 101 – Introduction to HVAC Systems
This course introduces students to the HVAC industry, including system types, career pathways, and foundational scientific principles. Students examine heat transfer, energy movement, and system components while developing familiarity with tools and safety practices. Emphasis is placed on recognizing system operation patterns and identifying early indicators of system inefficiencies.
HVAC 102 – Electrical Fundamentals for HVAC
This course provides foundational electrical knowledge required for HVAC applications. Students develop an understanding of electrical theory, circuit behavior, and component functionality. Hands-on training focuses on the use of diagnostic tools to measure and interpret electrical values. Emphasis is placed on identifying common electrical faults and understanding their impact on HVAC system performance.
HVAC 103 – Refrigeration Principles
This course introduces the principles of refrigeration and their application within HVAC systems. Students examine the refrigeration cycle, system components, and thermodynamic relationships that influence performance. Emphasis is placed on interpreting system pressures and temperatures to identify inefficiencies and faults.
HVAC 104 – Heating Systems
This course explores the operation and maintenance of residential and light commercial heating systems. Students examine electric, gas, and heat pump technologies, including combustion processes and energy transfer. Emphasis is placed on diagnosing system failures through structured troubleshooting approaches.
HVAC 105 – Cooling Systems
This course focuses on air conditioning systems, including system design, operation, and installation. Students analyze system performance through airflow measurement, temperature differentials, and component evaluation. Emphasis is placed on identifying performance deviations and resolving cooling inefficiencies.
HVAC 106 – Applied Electrical and Controls
This course builds on foundational electrical knowledge by focusing on HVAC control systems and circuit interpretation. Students learn to read wiring diagrams, analyze control sequences, and evaluate system responses. Emphasis is placed on diagnosing electrical control failures and tracing faults through system logic.
HVAC 107 – Air Distribution and Duct Systems
This course examines the principles of air movement and distribution within HVAC systems. Students analyze duct design, airflow measurement, and system balancing to evaluate performance. Emphasis is placed on diagnosing airflow restrictions and inefficiencies.
HVAC 108 – Installation Practices
This course focuses on proper HVAC system installation and startup procedures. Students learn equipment placement, piping techniques, and system commissioning processes. Emphasis is placed on identifying installation errors and understanding how improper installation impacts performance.
HVAC 109 – Diagnostics and Troubleshooting
This course centers on advanced troubleshooting methodologies for HVAC systems. Students apply structured diagnostic frameworks to identify and resolve complex system issues. Instruction integrates electrical, mechanical, and airflow analysis to support comprehensive problem-solving.
HVAC 110 – EPA 608 Certification Preparation
This course prepares students for EPA Section 608 Certification by covering regulatory requirements, refrigerant handling procedures, and environmental considerations. Students develop an understanding of compliance standards and complete practice assessments to prepare for certification testing.
HVAC 111 – Advanced Systems and Emerging Technologies
This course introduces advanced HVAC technologies and emerging industry trends. Students explore smart systems, energy-efficient solutions, and automated controls. Emphasis is placed on understanding how advanced systems influence diagnostics and service approaches.
HVAC 112 – Introduction to Commercial HVAC Systems
This course introduces students to the equipment, electrical systems, and operating principles commonly found in commercial HVAC applications. Students compare residential and commercial HVAC systems while developing a foundational understanding of commercial equipment identification, three-phase power systems, air distribution, controls, and safe work practices.
HVAC 113 – Career Readiness and Industry Preparation
This course prepares students for entry into the HVAC workforce. Students develop professional communication skills, job search strategies, and workplace readiness. Emphasis is placed on professionalism, accountability, and career advancement within the HVAC field.
HVAC 114 – Practical Skills Assessment
This course provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate foundational HVAC knowledge and practical skills through hands-on performance assessments. Emphasis is placed on safe work practices, diagnostic thinking, quality workmanship, and professional readiness for entry-level employment.

As students prepare for graduation, they participate in mock interviews and receive feedback to sharpen communication skills and build confidence in professional settings.
Professional Seminars & Career Development
Students attend four seminars on job readiness, professionalism, and workplace expectations. These sessions prepare students to confidently enter the workforce.

At Unitech Training Academy, you can finish our HVAC program in as few as 8 months! This traditional, in-person program combines technical instruction with practical lab training to prepare students for entry-level work in residential and light commercial HVAC. Across 750 hours of training, you’ll spend 390 hours in shop/lab settings building and applying the skills you learn in the classroom.
This is training built around the work you’ll do in the field. Through practical lab applications and simulated service conditions, you’ll use HVAC tools and equipment, troubleshoot system issues, test performance, and learn how to work toward the right solution.
As graduation approaches, you’ll put your skills to the test through practical performance assessments and prepare for EPA Section 608 Certification – bringing together what you’ve learned before taking your next step into the HVAC workforce.

Students attend class at one of our physical campuses, where all lectures, labs, and hands-on training are completed during scheduled class hours.
