Your Training is the Link Between Prescriptions and Patient Care.

The life of a pharmacy technician requires extensive knowledge and close attention to detail. Some of the duties a pharmacy technician can expect to perform on any given day are:

  • Packing and labeling medications
  • Dispensing medications
  • Preparing refills and new prescriptions
  • Tracking inventory
  • Processing insurance claims
  • Repackaging bulk medications
  • Providing customer service

You’ll also need to communicate and work well with others as you assist pharmacists and patients. You may have additional duties specific to your workplace if you work in a special environment.

PTP161 – Introduction to Pharmacy Technician

This introductory course describes the history of pharmacy practice, characteristics needed to become a Pharmacy Technician, communication and customer care, terminology and abbreviations related to pharmacy. Pharmacy law and ethics will be discussed while covering prescription and processing components.

PTP162 – Pharmacy Practice Settings

This course explores the fields of the hospital pharmacy and community pharmacy along with software used most commonly in the pharmacy field. Advanced pharmacy practices will be discussed while students learn compounding skills and aseptic techniques.

PTP163 – Administrative Skills

This course provides the students with an introduction to three main components of pharmacy administrative skills toinclude insurance and billing, inventory control and management, and business math. Students will learn various typesof private health insurance and government insurance plans and the process of adjudication regarding coverage.Purchasing, ordering and receiving process, and returns will be discussed. The students will learn about medicationerrors and safety and administrative math skills.

PTP164 – Pharmacy Calculations

This course prepares the student for the role of Pharmacy Technician by reviewing basic math skills, teaching the measurement systems, dosage calculations, concentrations and dilutions, allegations and parenteral calculations.

PTP165 – Pharmacology

This course defines the knowledge and skills required to perform an important role of a Pharmacy Technician. Drug formulations, drug administrations, drug classifications and drug reactions in the body will be taught. Biopharmaceuticals will also be introduced to the student.

PTP166 – Anatomy and Physiology with Medication Effects on Body Systems

This course explains the anatomical structure and function of the human body. Common diseases of each body system will be covered along with the explanation of how each class of drugs works in regards to certain diseases or conditions. Vital signs will also be taught as a part of training.

PTP167 – Special Topics

This course gives students an introduction to special considerations in pharmacy practice. Practice considerations related to pharmaceutical information and references and safety in the workplace will be taught.

PTP168 – Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam Review

Students can practice a certification exam review of topics presented while in class. Math and dosage calculation reviews along with drug classifications can be refreshed prior to the externship experience.

PTP169 – Externship

Students are required to complete 200 clock hours of an externship position in a pharmacy prior to graduation to suffice educational requirements determined between Unitech and the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.

As part of the Pharmacy Technician program, students gain valuable real-world experience through an externship in a local pharmacy or healthcare facility. This hands-on training helps reinforce classroom learning while giving students the opportunity to build professional connections and earn strong job references. With 200 hours of externship in a working pharmacy, you’ll be trained, tested, and career-ready before your diploma is even in hand.

Our Pharmacy Technician program prepares students to support pharmacists in a variety of roles, from medication preparation and inventory management to patient communication and insurance processing. Students are trained using industry-relevant tools, including PioneerRX software, which simulates real pharmacy workflows. This combination of practical skills and professional guidance helps students feel confident and career-ready as they enter the workforce.

Admissions Tours & Early Engagement

Career Services partners with Admissions during campus tours to introduce our support resources. This builds early trust and highlights the value of resume help and job placement assistance.

Orientation Presentation

During orientation, students learn how Career Services will support them throughout their program. Early connections with coordinators are encouraged to maximize success.

Midpoint Assessment & Career Planning

Around the program midpoint, students complete a career assessment. Coordinators use this to guide personalized planning and keep students on track toward their goals.

Resume Development (60 Days Before Graduation)

Resume building begins 60 days before graduation. Students receive templates and one-on-one support to craft polished, job-ready resumes.

Mock Interviews & Professionalism Coaching

Before clinicals, students participate in mock interviews and receive feedback. This helps sharpen communication skills and builds confidence in professional settings.

Professional Seminars & Career Development

Students attend four seminars on job readiness, professionalism, and workplace expectations. These sessions prepare students to confidently enter the workforce.

What campuses offer this hybrid program?

Unitech’s Pharmacy Technician program is offered at the Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Houma, Lafayette, New Orleans, and West Monroe campuses.

What is hybrid?

Unitech’s hybrid programs are offered at our six physical campuses across Louisiana, blending the structure of in-person learning with the flexibility of online coursework. Students attend campus 3 to 4 days a week, depending on whether they're in a day or evening program (evening availability may vary by campus), while virtual assignments and hours are completed independently and due each Sunday. The online portion of the program is designed to reinforce what you learn in class—helping you solidify your knowledge and apply it confidently in hands-on settings. With a structured schedule and instructor guidance, you’ll stay on track while building skills that translate directly into the real world.
