In less than 9 months, you’ll be prepared to support surgeons, prep operating rooms, and maintain sterile environments where every second counts.

When you choose our Surgical Technology program, you’ll be ready for entry-level positions in hospitals, outpatient centers, and surgical teams. From surgical instruments and aseptic techniques to anatomy, patient prep, and emergency procedures, you’ll learn what it takes to be a vital part of the team. The curriculum blends classroom instruction, lab simulations, and a 200-hour externship—giving you experience in both sterile field prep and real-world procedures.

This classroom and lab-based program is exclusively offered at our West Monroe campus, where students train in a focused, hands-on environment designed to prepare them for the surgical field.

Unitech Training Academy’s Surgical Technology program provides you with the essential knowledge and hands-on training needed to assist in the operating room. With a combination of classroom instruction, lab simulations, and a 200- hour externship, you’ll gain the experience it takes to thrive as a surgical technologist. Our instructors bring real-world insight to every lesson, making sure you’re job-ready, focused, and fully prepared to work alongside surgical teams in high-stakes environments.

ST151 – Introduction to Surgical Technology

This introductory course offers students an overview of the history of surgical technology, the roles of surgical team members, hospital management, and the physical environment of the operating room. It covers fundamental patient care concepts and addresses ethical, moral, and legal responsibilities.

ST152 – Anatomy and Physiology

Anatomy & Physiology is the study of the structure and function of the human body, and how these systems interact. The course covers the body’s major systems, structure and functions of the body, levels of organization of the human body, and the levels of organization in the human body from chemical and cellular levels to tissues, organs, and organ systems.

ST153 – Pathophysiology

This course will cover how diseases affect the body’s systems, causing functional changes that can lead to health consequences. They combine the study of pathology, the causes and effects of disease, with physiology, the study of how the body’s systems function.

ST154 – Surgical Pharmacology and Anesthesia

In this course, students will focus on the identification of drugs commonly used before, during, and after surgery.Discussions of where these drugs come from, how they are classified, the different ways they can be administered, theirpotential side effects, and any interactions between them. Students will also learn terminology, abbreviations, andcalculations related to pharmaceuticals. Students will learn how to prepare and manage medications for surgicalpatients, while also gaining an understanding of the laws, regulations, scope of practice, and ethical standards involvedin administering and dispensing drugs in the perioperative setting. Topics covered in Anesthesia Concepts includemethods, agents, and techniques. The application of homeostasis knowledge, including explanations of anesthesiamonitoring devices, preparation, complications, and interventions.

ST155 – Surgical Procedures and Practice

In this course, students will learn about disinfection, decontamination, and sterilization standards and practices in theoperating room. The primary topics covered include basic patient care, aseptic technique, preoperative routines (suchas transporting, transferring, and positioning the patient), instrumentation, surgical preparation, draping, urinarycatheterization, and other surgical support measures related to the care of the surgical patient. The course emphasizesthe application of aseptic techniques, managing environmental hazards, and infection control in the surgical field.

ST156 – Surgical Techniques

This course is designed to improve students' understanding of anesthesia and surgical pharmacology, as well as the concepts related to patient care, medications, anesthetics, drug calculations, and the legal policies and responsibilities involved. The surgical technique covers preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative case planning and implementation, including sutures, suturing devices, counts, wound care with regard to drains and dressings, tissue handling, and specimen care.

ST157 – Surgical Procedures I

In this course, students will apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to perform basic surgical and diagnostic procedures in an operating room suite. The course aims to build on the students' understanding of minor surgical procedures, using clinical simulations to provide practical experience.

ST158 – Surgical Procedures II

In this course, students will apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to perform basic surgical and diagnostic procedures in an operating room suite. The course aims to build on the students' understanding of major surgical procedures, using clinical simulations to provide practical experience.

ST159 – Certification Review and Strategies

This comprehensive course is designed to help students prepare for the certification exam in Surgical Technology by providing in-depth content review, test-taking strategies, and focused practice.

ST160 – Surgical Externship

The student has the opportunity to demonstrate a working knowledge of the skills required of a surgical technologist to function during minor cases under the supervision of a preceptor in the scrub role in a state approved healthcare facility.

During orientation, students learn how Career Services will support them throughout their program. Early connections with coordinators are encouraged to maximize success.

Midpoint Assessment & Career Planning

Around the program midpoint, students complete a career assessment. Coordinators use this to guide personalized planning and keep students on track toward their goals.

Resume Development (60 Days Before Graduation)

Resume building begins 60 days before graduation. Students receive templates and one-on-one support to craft polished, job-ready resumes.

Mock Interviews & Professionalism Coaching

Before clinicals, students participate in mock interviews and receive feedback. This helps sharpen communication skills and builds confidence in professional settings.

Professional Seminars & Career Development

Students attend four seminars on job readiness, professionalism, and workplace expectations. These sessions prepare students to confidently enter the workforce.

What campuses offer this hybrid program?

Unitech’s Surgical Technology program is offered exclusively at the West Monroe campus.

What is hybrid?

Unitech’s hybrid programs are offered at our six physical campuses across Louisiana, blending the structure of in-person learning with the flexibility of online coursework. Students attend campus 3 to 4 days a week, depending on whether they're in a day or evening program (evening availability may vary by campus), while virtual assignments and hours are completed independently and due each Sunday. The online portion of the program is designed to reinforce what you learn in class—helping you solidify your knowledge and apply it confidently in hands-on settings. With a structured schedule and instructor guidance, you’ll stay on track while building skills that translate directly into the real world.
